Kayla Wass
“Steel Guitars & Broken Hearts” I recently did a story on Kayla Wass, to put it simply WOW. I am so impressed with her singing. So, this is a review of her newest CD that came out this year. First off it has a great title “Steel Guitars & Broken Hearts” that is just beautiful. There are 12 amazing songs on this album, Kayla wrote one and co-wrote three songs. Kayla has such a beautiful voice and a way of singing that she makes each song her own. The album starts off strong with one of my favorites. “House Whiskey”. This takes the sensitive subject of alcohol abuse to a different level. This song was written in such a way that you could look at it where the person is just drinking the cheap Whiskey at the bar, which is referred to as House Whiskey or that they are drinking at home. I love the line “Too Much House Whiskey, Don’t Make A Home”, When you hear this first song, you know right away that Kayla has a strong & beautiful voice which is perfect for this style of music. The music for this song, has the right of amount of Country & Honky Tonk mix. The second song is “Pearls & Polyester” this song is about a High-Class girl falling in love with a Good Country Boy. This song has that 90’s Country Music feel to it. This song is a romantic way of saying that you never know where you will find love. Third song “I’m Not Looking Back” is a beautiful written song, Kayla sings it in such a way that you hear every bit of the emotions of the song. You definitely can feel how the woman in the song is just moving on. I think this song really shows the power in Kayla voice, the way she holds those long powerful notes and the way she starts & ends the song it just grabs your heart. The fourth song is “Slippin’” is a beautifully written song about a relationship going bad. Love the song is full metaphors about how the relationship just isn’t the same. Kayla does another great job of putting the feelings into the song. So that you can actually know what the women is going thru… The Fifth song “The Bottle” this song should be in the list of Best Country Songs Ever. This song is the perspective of a Whiskey Bottle. Kayla has the perfect tone for this song, she starts every line with a lower note and then brings it up for the chorus. The way this song is written and sung is right up there with George Jones song “He Stop Loving Her Today” The sixth song is “It’s Always A Song” this has definitely got the 90’s Country vibe. It has a wonderful message about how music can always bring back memories, be bad or good. Kayla’s voice in this song has the right energy. Kind of reminds me of Mary Chapin Carpenter. Another one of my favorites. The seventh song “Frozen Whiskey” is another good song. This is another perspective of someone with a drinking problem. But this song is from the side of the women having to deal with his drinking, showing how it makes a difference of what he drinks. Cause we all know that drinking can affect your personality. That is what makes this song so good, I don’t think that there is another one like it. The eighth song “Why Baby Why” I know this title is the same as a Webb Price song. But let me tell you, it is not. This song is another one that has that 90’s Country sound. Kayla’s vocals on this are impeccable, especially on the chorus. Plus, she finishes it off with a powerful ending. The song is about someone having trouble leaving a relationship. Beautiful written. The ninth song “I Pour” this song is another 90’s Country sound. This song is about someone trying to drink away a bad relationship. I always say if you want to write a good Country song then write about Whiskey. Kayla gives an excellent performance on this song, she has great harmonies on this. The tenth song “I won’t Give Up” this is a cover by Jason Mraz. Kayla does an outstanding job on this song. She puts so many emotions into it. I love how she kept it to the original The eleventh song “Nothing More Than Words” This song is written by Kayla. This is another of my favorites. I love how this song switches things around at the end. The girl realizes that she isn’t going to be the only one with a Heartache in the relationship. So, she is now Gone Like The Wind. Kayla vocals on this song are just beautiful. The last song “My Heart Is Talking To You” all I can say about this song is Wow. This is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard in a while. The way this was written you really don’t know the story till almost the end and then it just tears your Heart out.. Perfection… Ok, I can’t tell you how many times I listened to this album so that I could do this review. But I know that I could listen to it 10 more times without a problem. Kayla Wass has such a beautiful voice and amazing control. Kayla has one of those voices that is just so smooth and clean that from the first note you just have to sit back and listen. She transports you to another time and place. I don’t know what Kayla’s plans are, but she definitely needs to be on the radio. This album is a strong contender for my favorite album in 2023. Kayla Wass I just recently discovered Kayla Wass, all I can say is WOW. This young lady has got a voice, her tone is near perfect and the control that she has is impeccable. I have just recently got back to listening to Country music that is made today. Because of a good friend of mine who sings real honest Country music. This is how I feel about Kayla also, She definitely has a Country voice, and not the twangy kind which is nothing wrong with that. But Kayla’s is more of the smooth country voice that is filled with emotions you can feel when she sings. I recently got her CD and I think that I listen to it at least 4 times in a row. Besides Kayla’s unbelievable voice she is one heck of a songwriter. I believe that Kayla has learn the secret of a great Country song, which is “Whisky” because she has at least 4 on this amazing album. The album even has a great title “Steel Guitars & Broken Hearts” if that doesn’t scream Country music I don’t know what does… I will just mention a couple of my favorite songs off this album because I will be doing a full Album review coming up soon. The first one is “House Whiskey” this is just a great song that tackles a tough issue in life and Kayla does in a way that is not the usual way. She describes the problem in such a poetic way. I love the main line “Too Much House Whiskey, Don’t Make Home”. The second one is “The Bottle”, here again Kayla sings this song in the perspective of the Whiskey Bottle not the person. This is so well done. So, look forward to a full album review coming up in a few weeks, until check out the links below to learn more about Kayla Wass. Please support her in any way you can, I believe this young lady has a great future ahead. I also got a chance to ask Kayla some questions, please enjoy her answers. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100026605400265 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvkuRV_2SbjcyVUyeBREVcg https://music.apple.com/us/artist/kayla-wass/1608241012 https://open.spotify.com/artist/4MGa4tXeC2YKJrp7JCxqz2 1. How long have you been playing music? I’ve been singing professionally for 19 years, but I have loved singing since I could speak. I only started playing guitar more seriously about 10 years ago. 2. How many bands have you been in? I started out by joining the Mainely Country band back home and about a year later formed my own band, The Kayla Wass Band. I think we had that band for about 4 years before I moved to Nashville. Once in Nashville, it’s very different. You don’t really stick to just one group of players because everyone is off doing things with multiple people, so I have a list of people for each instrument that plays with me. They’re all fantastic musicians who just fall into place seamlessly in each set! It’s really amazing to be a part of. 3. Where were you born? I was born and raised near Bangor Maine and moved to Nashville a little over 12 years ago. 4. Are you self-taught? Vocally, I am self-taught. I did choir all through school, but never had any country lessons except for one at about 22 years old, with Renee Grant Williams to work on breath control and how to harness higher notes and body positioning. With guitar, I took lessons for two years with a guy who’s like family, Kevin Overlock. I started at 9 and went for about a year before I decided I wanted to do other things. But when I wanted to pick it back up a little bit at 18, he had already laid that foundation down, which was a huge help. And actually, Kevin is still my lead player back home anytime I go to play Maine gigs! 5. Who are your biggest influences? There are a lot of female country influences dating back to Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline. Then you move up into the 90s and it’s women like Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, The Judds. And my biggest current influence is Ashley McBryde. I learned some of my vocal tricks from people like Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani/No Doubt. 6. What style of music do you consider yours? I’m definitely a 90’s country kind of girl, but I like to range outside a little as well. The new record has a lot of 90s/early 2000s country influence 7. What was your first gig? How old were you? Honestly, it’s been so long I don’t remember exactly where it was. I know that I was 17 and it was with the Mainely Country Band. My first ever time out on a stage was during a cabaret show for my show choir junior year at 16. It was the first time I felt confident enough to get up on a stage. I sang ‘Arms of the Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan. 8. What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? If you are solely a vocalist, my biggest recommendation is to learn an instrument to be able to back yourself up. That way, you don’t ever get stuck unable to do a show because your guitar player got stuck in traffic, or something happened that they didn’t show up. You are self-sufficient. But also practice a ton and be prepared. Have FUN with it! Whether there’s one person in the audience or 1,000. You have the power to change someone’s day for the better with your music. 9. Do you write your own songs? I do write and co-write. I’ve got about five songs so far and getting into more these days. I’ve got some really fantastic writer friends who are inspiring me and showing me their process and influence. I really love it! 10. What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? Dave Matthews Band, probably. I also had an emo and rap phase growing up. But these days, as long as it has a good melody, great lyrics, or killer musicians, I’m into it. 11. What would you be doing if playing music was not an option? I always dislike this question and we had a discussion about it on the road this weekend. If I have a backup, I’m not all in. My passion is for music and it’s what I dedicate my life to. If there comes a day where the passion is no longer there, I’ll need to find out what my new passion is. 12. Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? It constantly changes when you play full time. There’s always at least one Ashley McBryde that I feel the need to play each gig, if not 4-5 of them. I love singing ‘If I Were You’ by Terri Clark and ‘No Place That Far’ by Sara Evans. Then there’s plenty of 90’s male country music from Joe Diffie to Tracy Lawrence to big harmony bands like Diamond Rio. 13. If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? People who have pure vocals like Ashley McBryde, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, Randy Houser are incredible vocalists. He would be cool to have sing one of my songs. Mark Wills is another incredible pure vocalist. Devon Cahill
This Blog is about one of my dearest friends and my favorite Female singer in my hometown of St. Louis, MO. I have own Devon since 2015, I believe that I first saw Devon perform at a record store here in town “Vintage Vinyl”. It was an awesome setting, and she was amazing. I could listen to Devon sing all the time. I try to get out to her shows when I can. To me Devon has such a pure & beautiful voice, her tone is so breath taking. When she sings you can hear & feel every note. I always try to find another singer to try and explain to someone who has never heard of Devon, so far I have never found anyone like her. Every time I listen to her sing especially live it just fills my heart with happiness. Now on to Devon songwriting, Devon only has one EP that is available. When she writes, it definitely is from the heart and life experience. For example, the song “Actor Song” is referenced to her younger days of being in the Theater. Another song from this EP is “When I Wake” this is such a beautiful song. Devon has even written a song about a Twilight Zone episode “A Stop At Willoughby” I could on & on about Devon Cahill. I produce House Concerts with some friends of mine. We did a lot of them back in 2019 and Devon did two shows. We just recently started back up this year and I couldn’t have thought of a better way to start off the series than to have Devon do the first show. It was amazing. She has been learning a song for me “Oh Darling” by the Beatles and she honored me with singing it that night. I was deeply touched. Here are some links to find out about Devon Cahill, also I had the chance to ask Devon some questions. Here are her answers. Enjoy. I highly recommend if you are in St. Louis and Devon Cahill is playing somewhere then you should go. https://www.facebook.com/Devoncahillmusic https://www.youtube.com/@vivoga 1.How long have you been playing music? I’ve been playing music for about 11 years now! 2. How many bands have you been in? I’ve been in several bands over the years, including Traveling Sound Machine, Letter to Memphis, and currently I sing backing vocals for The Defeated County. I now play as Devon Cahill when I’m playing my own music whether I have my band with me or not. 3. Where were you born? I was born and raised in St. Louis, and I love it here. The music scene is one of the best, and I’m so thankful. 4. Are you self-taught? I’m partially self-taught. I picked up ukulele in 2012 and then used the skills I learned on that instrument to move up to guitar. I now have around 30 original songs I’ve written on guitar and ukulele. 5. Who are your biggest influences? My biggest influences are Jenny Lewis, Roy Orbison, Norah Jones, M. Ward, Joseph, Lucius, and Brandi Carlile. 6. What style of music do you consider yours? I consider my style of music to be indie folk with a country jazzy twist. 7. What was your first gig? How old were you? My first gig was at a dive bar in Carondelet called Halfway Haus. It was a 3-hour gig, and we played lots of covers and just a few originals. I was so nervous! I was about 24 or 25 years old at the time. 8. What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? My advice would be to just be tenacious and put yourself out there. If you want to share your music you have to love it too and have a great passion for it. Believe in yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others, and just keep going even when the going gets hard. 9. Do you write your own songs? Yes, I’ve been writing my own songs for the past 11 years. I love to write; it brings me so much joy. 10. What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? I’ve got a lot of records you would imagine I’d have, but I’m excited to receive a hand me down from my mom of every Blondie album that ever came out. I can’t wait for the day I get this sweet gift. 11. What would you be doing if playing music was not an option? If playing music wasn’t an option, I would probably be doing theatre. I did a lot of musical theatre when I was younger, and I still have a great passion for it. 12. Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? My favorite song that came out recently that I like to perform is Love is Light, by Yola. As far as older songs are concerned, I love playing Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. 13. If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? I would love for my girl Jenny Lewis to play my songs. Or maybe another one of my favorite artists, like Brandi, Norah, etc. That would be so amazing! GeminiiDragon
I first of GeminiiDragon on YouTube. The first song I heard was “Good Thang”, I was captured by the sound of her voice. She definitely has a Funky/Soul sound, which really captures your attention. GeminiiDragon has a way to sing a song by putting so many emotions into with her vocals that it’s almost like a Religious experience. GeminiiDragon also has strong songwriting skills, she really draws from her roots of growing up in Louisiana. A lot of her songs have a lot of the old Blues influences, plus the songs also have a healthy dose of Funk. GeminiiDragon has a new album coming out “Equinox” I can’t wait to hear it. I highly recommend checking out the links below to hear the amazing songs from GeminiiDragon. I had the chance to ask GeminiiDragon some questions. The answers are below. Enjoy. https://www.facebook.com/GeminiiDragon/ https://linktr.ee/GeminiiDRAGON https://www.youtube.com/@GeminiiDRAGON 1.How long have you been playing music? As a legitimate artist, about two years. As an aspiring artist, which probably doesn’t count… lol.. off and on since 2004. 2.How many bands have you been in? I’ve been in 1 working band, and several others that didn’t make it past rehearsals. 3.Where were you born? Thibodaux, La 4.Are you self-taught? Yes and No. I was a voice major for a couple of years. Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Koko Taylor, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, Nina Simone 6.What style of music do you consider yours? Blues Rock 7.What was your first gig? How old were you? My first paid gig; a 30-minute set opening for Ronnie Bell and Nicole Jackson at a small club in Houma, La called The Boulevard Ultra Lounge in 2014. I guess my first time performing or singing would be in church when I was a little girl. 8.What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? Be knowledgeable, research who is doing it well and learn from them, find a team of people you trust and that know more than you do, work hard and consistently. 9.Do you write your own songs? I spent years writing my own songs, not wanting to collaborate or turn over the reins to anyone, incorrectly thinking to be legitimate I had to do it all on my own… didn’t get me anywhere. Now, I’ve collaborated with someone who has been doing it longer and better and successfully. I’m content with co-writing. 10.What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? Too much to name. I listen to everything. I love music. I first heard Chris sing when the group he is in The Kingdom Brothers played at The Blues City Deli many years ago. Chris’s voice is very Soulful and Bluesy. I think that Chris has a similar sound as the late Sam Cook and Tyrone Davis. He can really put emotions into the songs he sings. No matter if is one of his originals or a cover. Chris may not be a St. Louis native; I still consider him one of the best Male singer here and becoming a St. Louis Legend. One of my favorite songs is Little Things, which is written by Chris. Besides being one of the finest singer in St. Louis, Chris is also one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet. I got a chance to ask Chris some questions, here are his answers. If you ever get a chance to see Chris perform live, I highly recommend you do… Also I have some links below to check out some of Chris’s music. https://chrisshepherdband.com/ https://www.shepherdandmcdonough.com/ https://kingdombrothersband.com/ 1. How long have you been playing music? Answer: Since I was a teenager. I got more serious about performing and songwriting in my early 20's. 2. How many bands have you been in? Answer: Maybe 6 or 7? I play with a few different groups now besides Kingdom Brothers. There's a group of us local musicians that kind of show up in different combinations for different events. 3.Where were you born? Answer: Kingsville Texas, my dad was stationed there when he was in the navy 4.Are you self-taught? Answer: Yeah, pretty much. I took lessons for a little while when I was a teenager but mostly just picking things up from the guitar players I play with. 5.Who are your biggest influences? Answer: Wow! So many! I grew up listening to my dad's records like BB King, Bobby Blue bland and a bunch of the old soul greats like Tyrone Davis and Joe Tex. When I was older guys like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton and Jeff Healey brought me back to the Blues 6.What style of music do you consider yours? Answer: I guess if I had to choose, maybe “Soul Blues” 7.What was your first gig? How old were you? Answer: The first big public performance I can remember was at my High School Graduation. Answer: Learn as much as you can about music and the music business. You need to learn what makes the creative process work, but you also need to understand how to be professional and make money. I always tell young musicians to work on being a great musician and don't worry so much about being famous. The best musicians are the folks getting paid to write songs, to go on tour or to record with the “famous” stars. You can make your money without all of the pressure. 9.Do you write your own songs? I guess just working to make money. 12.Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? I think it changes depending on the performance. I always enjoy singing “Change my Mind” by Tyrone Davis or Etta James “Rather Go Blind” 13.If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? Answer: Robert Cray or Keb Mo to start. Here are all 31 days of March's 2023

When I first watched a video of theirs and heard Kira Annalise sing. I was hooked on the style which is Honky Tonk. Kira has such an amazing voice and perfect tone for the style of music they play. Kira has a strong control of her vibrato and can sneak in a yodel every once in a while, which really puts a nice hook in the songs. Caitie's Voice is awesome for the Singer/songwriter genre. You just have to stop what you are doing and listen when a song by Caitie comes on, because you know it's going to just tuck at your heart. Now on the flip side Caitie also has a voice for some hard rock songs. She does a great rendition of "White Rabbit". Let's not forget her Guitar playing is outstanding. The video I chose is an original of Rachel's and this why I am Honoring Rachel Crowe for Women's History Month. 25th installment for Women's History Month/ Women in music. I have known Vicki for about 12 yrs. She is half of the Blues Duo of Joe & Vicki Price. I have seen them perform many time in St. Louis, Mo. @ The Blues City Deli. So, this is why I am Honoring Vicki Price for Women's History Month. The song I chose is one of my favorites that Vicki sings. 26th installment for Women's History Month/ Women in music. I have Known Joyann Parker for about 6 years. When I first heard Joyann sing, it was a Wow moment. She has a voice that can be soulful Like in her song "Envy" & then it can go a totally different direction when she sings Patsy Cline songs.. Joyann does this so effortlessly. I love the tone of her voice, it's in the lower range which to me is always easy to listen to. Song I chose is one that I think defines a singer, They can either do the song justices or totally ruin it, there is not in between. Joyann Parker nails it and this is why I am Honoring her for Women's History Month. 27th installment for Women's History Month/ Women in music. Donna Herula is one of the finest female Blues singer & musician today that is keeping the tradition of the Older Blues Alive. Donna's vocals have a little bit Memphis Minnie & Bessie Smith. The song I chose is one of my favorites by Donna... 28th installment for Women's History Month/ Women in music. I have known of Ivy Ford for about 4 years. I think what grabbed my attention with Ivy was a combination of her outstanding guitar playing and her singing. She definitely is The Chicago Blues Sound; her voice has an amazing tone to sing the Blues. It's like when she sings you can get the feeling of being on the southside of Chicago, but in the same voice Ivy can do justice to a Robert Johnson song. Ivy's guitar playing is right up there with all the Greats. So, this is why I am Honoring Ivy Ford for Women's History Month. The video chose is one that really showcase Ivy's talent. 29th installment for Women's History Month/ Women's Month. It's only been about a year since I first heard The HawtThorns. KP Hawthorn is lead Female vocals. KP's voice has a beautiful tone and such a charming vocal style. I kind of think of it as the same as Female Singer/songwriters from the 60's & 70's. When you hear Kp sing it just turns every song into a very poetic sound. Just makes you feel Happy inside. This is why I am Honoring KP Hawthorn for Women's History Month. The video I chose is one of my favorite songs By The HawtThorns. 30th installment for Women's History Month/ Women in music. This installment is a very dear Friend of mine, Holly Benton. I have Known Holly for almost 10 years. She is also from Missouri, I first heard Holly on Reverbnation, I remember that when I heard the first few lines from the song "Drawn To You" I thought to myself, she is unbelievable. I have never heard anyone sing like this, I have be listening to music for over 50 years. Holly vocals are just so addicting, she has a slight lower range then most female singers. But her control & tone are top notch, plus Holly has a way of putting such strong emotions in to the songs that she sings, either her own or covers. Holly is one of the few singers that I know who does justice to "I Rather Go Blind" So this is why I am Honoring Holly Benton for Women's History Month. The video I chose is one of my favorite songs by Holly Benton, that Holly wrote. So this being the last day in March and the last day for Women's History Month. I would like to thank all the amazing women that I Honored. You all have played an important part in my life with your music. I would also like to give kudos to many other Female Artist that I didn't get a chance to mention. Lastly I would love to give a special thanks to the Women in my Family & that are Friends because you all have help make me into the man I am today. Thank you everyone. Love you all, you all know who you are Jena Jane
I found Jena Jane on YouTube; I heard her song “Whiskey My Old Friend”. The song it’s self is amazing, then you have Jena sing it with her beautiful voice it just gets 100 times better. Jena has a voice that you would first think Country, but it’s much more than that. Jena’s voice is very strong with emphasis of the Country/Rock tone to it. But she can sing neither style with the same energy & emotions. Jena’ has a 7 song EP out, I have to say that any one of these songs could be on the Radio right now and would be better then some of the so-called Country Music that is on the Radio. Jena also has a talent for song writing. She writes songs that is for everyone that who has been in love or has gotten drunk. She goes from a song about a “Dive Bar” to an emotional song “Whiskey My Old Friend” (which is my favorite), then you have a song called “Blame It On Elvis” which has a little bit more rock style to it. Jena is a breath of fresh air as far as the latest in the next generation of singers. I personally think that we are going to hear a lot more from Jena. I have to links below so that you can check out Jena’s music, also I was able to ask Jena some questions. https://www.jennajanemusicofficial.com/ https://www.facebook.com/jennajanemusic 1. How long have you been playing music? I have been playing music live for about 13 years. Been singing and playing guitar for as long as I can remember. 2. How many bands have you been in? I have been in about 5 bands before pursuing a solo career with a backing band. 3. Where were you born? I was born in Fort Atkinson, WI 4. Are you self-taught? For the most part I would say I am self-taught, however, I had an incredible amount of help and influence from my father and uncle. They are both musicians. I guess you could say it just came naturally. 5. Who are your biggest influences? My biggest influences are the talented musicians that I have surrounded myself with while growing in the industry, but if I had to say which famous artists helped form my sound, it would have to be Martina McBride, Shania Twain, and Sara Evans. 6. What style of music do you consider yours? I would say I am a mix of Modern Country and Outlaw Country. 7. What was your first gig? How old were you? My first gig was at the Pizza Pub in the Wisconsin Dells. I was 12 years old and scared out of my mind! 8. What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? The best advice I have for someone just starting in the business is not to give up. Sometimes the hardest part is to just keep playing and performing. You get discouraged because it’s not an easy business, but if it truly is your passion, don’t give up on it. 9. Do you write your own songs? I do write my own songs. I currently have 8 original songs released, with more on the way! 10. What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? I think they would be surprised to find a Buckingham’s record. I secretly love 60’s music! 11. What would you be doing if playing music was not an option? If I wasn’t playing music, I would probably be involved with sales or marketing. Marketing is one thing I really enjoy! I like creating promotional material. 12. Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? It’s a toss-up between Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac or Black Velvet by Alannah Myles 13. If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? I’d probably like to see one of my idols like Martina, Shania, or Sara Evans sings my songs. Alyssa Galvan
I first saw & heard Alyssa on her Gems in the Rough 2021 video. She sang an original song “Still In Love With You” this song is written in the style of an old Blues song that could have been sang by Bessie Smith. Alyssa is from my home state of Missouri. I always happy to see the younger generation finding out about the older music especially The Blues. Alyssa not only has an amazing voice that is suited for the Blues, but she also very talented at playing the Blues and writing old style Blues songs. Let’s talk about Alyssa’s voice, She has such control and an amazing tone. Being as young as Alyssa is she can sing in the style of all the Older Blues singer, plus she can yodel with the best. If you listen to Alyssa sing with your eyes closed, you will think that this was something from the 1920’s 0r 30’s. And I am talking about the songs she writes. Alyssa also can play the guitar just as well as the ones who influenced her from the Blues genre. Alyssa mostly plays solo, but you will read in the questions below that recently Alyssa was able to join in with some other young people to form an international group. So I highly recommend if you love Old style Blues then check out Alyssa Galvan. There are links below and some questions I was able to ask Alyssa. https://www.youtube.com/@AlyssaGalvanMusic https://www.alyssagalvanmusic.com/ 1.How long have you been playing music? I have been playing music since I was about twelve years old. My first gig was when I was thirteen and ever since I have been gigging regularly and focusing on music. 2. How many bands have you been in? I’ve had the amazing opportunity to share the stage with several incredible musicians and kind people. While I love the idea of performing regularly with a band I have only been in one band prior to the one I am currently involved in. We were a swing and jazz group! Now I am the singer/guitarist for The International Crossroads Project, a French/American youth band that formed after meeting at a Pinetop Perkins Foundation Summer Masterclass. 3. Where were you born? I was born in Beloit, Wisconsin and while I didn’t experience growing up there very much, we visit my family there every few years. I remember being very young and living in Shreveport, Louisiana for a while before relocating to southwest Missouri, which is where I am now! 4. Are you self-taught? I had guitar lessons for about a year when I was ten years old, but I didn’t engage in them as much as I should have. I quickly left after gathering the basics and began to really start learning on my own. 5. Who are your biggest influences? My musical influences really come from a broad variety but 70’s/80’s punk rock and new wave is really what drove my passion to be a performer. Icons such as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Lou Reed, and several others from the New York scene hold a forever spot in my heart. From gritty punk rock and hardcore I discovered early 1900’s blues players like Blind Willie McTell, Son House, Big Mama Thornton, etc. These blues musicians are who inspire me to really indulge in songwriting, and recently I have been really involved with the blues scene and blues music. I enjoy lots of old folk and country music as well, which has inspired my songwriting too. 6. What style of music do you consider yours? . I think every artist struggles with this question. I consider my music to just take inspiration from every genre I enjoy, which is a wide selection. Mostly I’d consider my songs to fall under the category of blues and folk. However, I have a few unreleased side projects that involve surf punk! 7. What was your first gig? How old were you? My first gig was at Dead Cow Saloon and Grill in Carterville, Missouri when I was thirteen. It isn’t around anymore but that is where I first started playing music after attending a weekly open mic. The people there were always so kind to me and I couldn’t thank them enough for their support when I was just starting out. 8. What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? While I haven’t been in the music business too long, I have learned several things along the way. Nearly every incredible opportunity I have gotten has been a result of networking. It is so important and can launch you into a whole new scene that is looking for something you have to offer. Some of my greatest accomplishments were presented to me because of open mics I have attended or charities I have supported. You never know who will be where. 9. Do you write your own songs? Yes! I have a self-titled album I released in early 2021 when I was fifteen which consists of my original songs in an acoustic format. I am always writing music and have plans to release another album under my name in the near future, as well as two other projects I am apart of! 10. What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? I always get excited to talk about my record collection. I have a wide variety from all genres, but I do have several original pressings I am thrilled to have. I have got an original pressing of “The Velvet Underground and Nico”, one of my favorite albums of all time. My rarest first pressings would have to be The Modern Lovers debut album, Tom Waits “Rain Dogs”, Suicide’s self-titled album, or a couple of first pressing James Chance albums I was lucky to come across. I could really talk about my collection all day to anyone who would be willing to listen. 11. What would you be doing if playing music was not an option? I truly could not imagine myself doing anything else besides music. My life would be so drastically different, sometimes I hate to even think of what it’d be like if I never started to pursue it. Although, I know I’d still be a writer. I’ve always loved writing since I was very young. One day I’d like to think I’ll be brave enough to attempt to publish some poetry or a novel. 12. Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? I always love doing the occasional off the wall cover that nobody would ever expect. These usually fall into the classic punk rock category. I always love bonding with other punk lovers at shows when they hear me do a classic. However, the first that comes to mind is Scrapper Blackwell’s version of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out”. I remember first learning the guitar part and working really hard on it. Ever since it’s been one of my favorite songs to perform, it has so much emotion in it. 13. If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? This is a really interesting question! I have never ever thought of this before. I am not sure at all who I would want to sing my songs. I think it’d be interesting to hear different takes. Tom Waits is one of my heroes. If he sang one of my songs I don’t know what I’d do, let alone if he was in my presence. Either Tom Waits or Jonathan Richman. The HawtThorns
This Blog is about KP & Johnny Hawthorn who make up the musical group The HawtThorns. I first heard them on YouTube channel, I think what hit me first was KP’s singing. Her voice had such a beautiful tone to it. To me it has a certain 60’s songwriter kind of vibe to it. The other thing that I really love about The HawtThorns is that they really don’t fit into any one genre. If you would put them into one I guess it would be Americana, but that is a large spectrum for them. I would say that for bands like The HawtThorns needs to have a genre is called “Heartland”. Cause I believe that their music is born out of the good American Heartland & for the people in the Heartland. Besides KP having such a beautiful voice, she has such great control of her vocals and a very unique sound. There are a few songs that Johnny sings on, their harmonies are perfect and Johnny’s guitar playing is right up there with some of the greats in the same genre. Like Leo Kottke, Jerry Douglas & Albert Lee. Now let’s talk about The HawtThorns songwriting, the songs that they write are so heartfelt songs. They have songs with such sweet melodies and beautiful lyrics, then you will get one with a more upbeat sound. No matter which song you are listening to there isn’t a bad one on the two albums they have out. The two albums they have are “Morning Sun” & “Tarot Cards And Shooting Stars”. The “Morning Sun” album some great songs, my favorites are “The 405” & “Lucky Charm”. My favorite songs from “Tarot Cards & Shooting Stars” are “Let’s Get Together” & “One Human At A Time”. The HawtThorns is a duo that I will be following for along time. Their music is timeless, it’s that kind of music that you just wanted to sit down and listen to the whole album. It will just put you in a warm safe place. So, I definitely recommend checking out The HawtThorns at the links I have below. Also, I was able to ask KP & Johnny some questions, enjoy their answers below. https://www.thehawtthorns.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheHawtThorns 1. How long have you been playing music? We have both been playing music since we were kids, we both became professional musicians in our early 20’s. I (KP) started songwriting and recording and was able to get songs placed in TV shows on network and cable shows pretty quickly starting in about 2006. Johnny also jumped into that arena and creates lots of music for shows on cable tv - The HawtThorns songs have also been featured on several network tv shows. 2. How many bands have you been in? Collectively the number has got to be in the 20’s! However, KP had a pretty lengthy stint as a solo artist (Kirsten Proffit) and then started a female trio called CALICO the band in 2012 that lasted 8 years. Johnny has been a side player in countless bands as he was a first call guitar player for bands like Toad The Wet Sprocket, Everclear, and many local LA bands - he also made 3 solo records as The Johnny Hawthorn Band. 3. Where were you born? KP was born in Santa Cruz, CA and Johnny is from Philadelphia, PA 4. Are you self-taught? KP learned guitar from lots of great players throughout the years and was a serious choral student - however the style and delivery of the performance of both has been something that was worked on personally. Johnny went to GIT in Los Angeles early on in his career for guitar but continues to learn and grow by studying his heroes! 5. Who are your biggest influences? We both love the music of Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Tom Petty and other icons. Bands like the Jayhawks, Wilco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Lucinda Williams have definitely influenced our style. We also love some great voices like Etta James, Otis Redding and Donny Hathaway. 6. What style of music do you consider yours? That is a hard one for us because we are fans of so much. The umbrella of Americana music seems to be where we fit these days, but we like to call what we do country-flavored songwriter rock. We really love the r&b country that Chris Stapleton is putting out, we also love the blues rock of Tedeschi-Trucks. We are fans of indie-Americana bands that are always pushing the envelope and we get very bored with artists who continue to make derivative music. 7. What was your first gig? How old were you? Gosh, I really don’t remember. I (KP) think I was 18 and played at a place in southern Cal called the Bull & Moose. Johnny played his first gig at a bar in Burbank when he was 19 8. What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? Remember that it needs to be fun, try to have something to say, don’t stop making things 9. Do you write your own songs? We are both writers and we write regularly but we also love to perform a great cover tune 10. What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal record collection? Our record collection has a pretty broad selection - we have some late 1970s punk rock that we love and might surprise a few folks! 11. What would you be doing if playing music was not an option? We’d become chef/dog walkers 12. Besides your own songs, what is your favorite song to perform? We have a pretty great version of Led Zeppelin’s Going to California that we love doing 13. If you were strictly a songwriter, who would you like to see sing your songs? Our favorite singers are fairly unknown here in Nashville so you wouldn’t necessarily know the people we would write for. However, if Brandie Carlisle, Chris Stapleton, Bonnie Raitt, Laura Marling, Kacey Musgraves needed some inspiration, we would be more than happy to send over a few song ideas! LilG
This blog is about LilG from Australia, She is around 11 years old. But has the talent & skill of someone much older. I first saw LilG on YouTube doing a Stevie Ray Vaughan song, She nailed it. LilG also can do an amazing job on the Surf Guitar sound of the early days of Dick Dale. LilG’ s debut album is Surf Music, sounds great. But it seems that in the last couple years she has lean more towards the Blues style. I feel that LilG has made the right choice, even though her vocals are not quite there yet. But she does have a strong singing voice. I feel that LilG has the Heart & Soul to sing the Blues with such conviction for such a young age. LilG’ s guitar playing seems so effortless, like she has been playing for years. Each note she plays you can hear the passion from her. LilG is always busking in Australia, She post some of the videos of her busking and I have to say that she keeps getting better with each one. When I watch LilG on her videos I can see how she really gets into the music she plays. She has a strong passion for music, which I can really appreciate and admire. I feel that someday LilG will be playing to large crowds soon, So I know that I am going to be following LilG’ s career because I believe that she is destined for great things. Here are some questions that I got to ask LilG, I really love some of answers they are so honest.
