This blog is on one of the best guitar player here in St. Louis, MO. In my opinion. That is none other than Brian Curran. I think Brian is like the second musician that I became friends with back in 2011. One of the first places I saw Brian perform was at The Blues City Deli. What really caught my attention with Brian is that he plays a lot of old Blues, like from Mississippi John Hurt, Fred McDowell and Skip James. The other thing is that he talks about the artist and the songs, which is really cool. I learned a lot this way from Brian. When Brian plays, he always tries to keep it true to the form it was originally perform in. Sometimes Brian is not afraid to put his own stamp on the music he loves. I also feel that the Brian is in the category of one of the next St. Louis Music Legends.
Brian has performed at some of the area's top venues including Off Broadway, The Pageant, B.B.'s Jazz Blues & Soups, The Blues City Deli and many more. Brian is also not just a one man show. In addition to playing solo, he is well known as a duo with Adam Andrews on harmonica. Brian has been studying blues and fingerstyle guitar for over 20 years. He keeps his feet planted firmly in the sounds of the past but Brian also travels regionally. On stage Brian puts on a great show and always gets the audience involved. He is known to sometimes tell as many stories and jokes to the listeners as songs. Altogether, whether solo or with a band, you can't go wrong no matter what your taste in music might be. Going to see Brian is just a plain old fun time. Here is where you can find out more about Brian Curran. https://www.briantcurran.com/ https://www.facebook.com/brian.t.curran I highly recommend if you ever get the opportunity to see Brian Curran perform, you should do so. Here are some questions I was able to ask Brian.
2.How many bands have you been in? I have been in a few. The first was a duo with Jon Erblich called “Dusty Blues.” Then I worked with him in an electric band called the “Blues Knights” then became “Have Mercy Band”. After that I continued solo for a long time. Eventually, I started playing a steady duo with Eric Mcspadden. We primarily played at Beale on Broadway every Thursday night for about 3 years. During the same time, I continued to play solo and with another electric group called “River City Blues”. Also, during that time, I formed FolknBluesGrass. An eclectic acoustic roots group. We played together a very good while till about 2010 or so. Currently I am still playing solo as well as with The Dust Covers. 3.Where were you born? I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to STL on my birthday in 1982. 4.Are you self-taught? Both really. I have taken formal lessons on and off since I picked up the guitar. 5.Who are your biggest influences? Oh boy that is a tough one! More like who is not! For real though I would say the two people that really sparked my interest in guitar the most would have to be John Lee Hooker and locally The Tom Hall. 6.What style of music do you consider yours? I would consider myself a blues/roots guitarist. 7.What was your first gig? How old were you? I will never forget it! It was with James Crutchfield at The Venice Café! I was about 17 or 18 years old! I got paid $50.00! 8.What advice do you have for someone starting out in the music business? Never give up! You can do it! Also remember that making it in the music Bizz does not mean becoming a “star”. 9.Do you write your own songs? I do on occasion but rarely perform them live. 10.What would people be surprised to hear that you have in your personal song collection? Primus!!!
