I want to tell you about a singer/musician I have recently came upon. I can’t really tell you how came to learn about Sarah King, other than through Facebook.
Sarah Hails from Maine, she started singing in the 5th grade chorus. She learned to play some guitar from some high school friends. Sarah remembers buying her first guitar on her 18th Birthday and has been playing it ever since then. Sarah has been in one official other band that did well around the Southeast - Ophir Drive. They were a hard rock/blues-based group in Georgia and toured regionally for a few years. The same bandmates are the ones backing Sarah on What Happened Last Night. Sarah was also in a rock cover band in high school that she says wasn't great, but they did get some gig singing at the Maine state capitol building for the governor once, so that is pretty cool for a High School Kids. As far as any training Sarah has taken some Voice lesson they were mainly focused on Operatic techniques. Sarah’s vocal teacher was also a piano teacher and taught Sarah some basic skills on the piano. Sarah’s self-taught on the guitar with learning some from friends and later taking guitar workshops. Now if someone ask me to describe Sarah King’s sound, I will have to say honestly, I don’t know where I would put it. For one thing her voice is unique. It is somewhere between Opera and Americana very beautiful voice easy to listen to, plus she has a voice that pulls you into the song. She always put such raw emotions in her voice when she sings. Sarah’s songs are very deep and somewhat dark which is alright with me, songs don’t always have to be up-beat and light. I recently got Sarah’s CD “What Happened Last Night”, Now if you know me and have listened to Sarah’s music you would know that it’s not my style of music. But when I first heard Sarah sing it just gave me chills there is just something about her voice that really sets the mood and emotions of the song. Now that is my style of music, I just love it when an Artist can do that. To me that is a true gift. I love all the songs on the CD, if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be “Restored” I recently ask Sarah What influences her music, this is what she said “I like to jokingly say my biggest influences are bourbon and bad decisions. Seriously, who wants to hear a song about eating salad and going to work on time? I'm sure some people do, but not me. My songs tend to hang out in the darkness. Occasionally some super poppy, upbeat, inspirational tune will come out, but I'm almost guaranteed to never play it, ha-ha”. I also asked Sarah to describe her style of music, here is what she said. “That's also a bit of a challenging question! I've been all over the place, truly - from opera to pop to folk to metal. I think I sit pretty squarely in the folk-noir, Americana, blues-rock genre these days, and I'm happy to be there” I asked Sarah what advice she would give someone that is thinking of getting into the music biz. Here is her advice, “Be patient and don't listen to everyone else. Plenty of people are going to have their own opinions about what you should be doing. You'll want to look at them and see whether they're doing what you want to do, if they're where you want to be, and if not, you can choose to ignore them. Forge your own path. Patience is key in this industry. Rarely does a musician blow up as an overnight success. If you don't love the journey, you're going to be miserable.” I came upon this description of Sarah’s music, not sure who wrote but I totally agree with it. “Sarah King’s versatile vocals alternate between coaxing and commanding, tricking the listener into thinking and feeling after being drawn in on the surface by hummable, radio-ready hooks. With songs ranging from blues-influenced murder ballads to fierce female-empowerment anthems, her powerful voice is rooted in Americana and soul.” So, in closing I have to say I would highly recommend checking out Sarah’s music.
